I recently unearthed a few extra copies of Caught In Flux, the zine I published between 1992 and 1999, so I thought I'd put them up here. Issue #7 came out in the spring of 1999. It was my last until 2022. Frankly, I was relieved. Sales were dropping anyway, the Internet had at the time made zines obsolete, and I hated begging for ads and distribution. I never stopped writing - I was constantly blogging and posting on social networking, and I was a contributing writer to the local alt-weekly - but I never published again.
Issue #7 included pieces on:
- Mitch Easter
- Beanpole
- obscure K Records group Oklahoma Scramble
- Fat Tulips
- Red Monkey (Slampt/Avocado Baby/etc)
- Sleepy Township
- the definitive Poconos tour diary, written by Tami and me
- Beikoku-Ongaku zine from Japan, one of my all-time favorites
All in all, not a bad way to bow out. The cover was based on a bouillon cube cookbook I found in a Hoboken thrift store. The cover came out dark enough that you can't see that the hexagonal figures were, in fact, boullion cubes. That made it more original, at least.
