The fifth issue of Writer's Block was released in the fall of 1989. It included pieces on:
- The Raincoats: years before their reunion, featuring some of their only interview quotes from the entire period they were inactive
- Some Velvet Sidewalk: a short, fun conversation with Al Larsen
- Gretchen Phillips: ostensibly about Two Nice Girls, but really more about Meat Joy, the art-punk band she was in earlier that decade
- blackgirls: an intense trio from North Carolina
- various reviews, as was the style at the time
The Raincoats was the second postpunk piece I'd published. As with the prior issue's Young Marble Giants piece, I was pretty much constructing a history from scratch, using the few press clippings and articles I could find and hoping it matched reality. The Raincoats and YMG are now considered respected elders, but in 1989 they were almost forgotten. You can imagine how over the moon I was hearing from Ana and Gina. They were, and are, two of the coolest and most inspirational people I've ever met.
This was the second issue we had professionally printed (Falcon Printing in Westfield, NJ - I don't think they're there anymore) and the first to be carried by Tower Magazines. I'm glad to make it available now.
